Responsibilities of the Student-Athlete
1. Complete a pre-participation medical examination administered by a licensed medical doctor and complete all insurance and medical history information forms prior to participating in official Drexel University athletic activity. Note: the physical required for students upon entering the University is different than the physical required by sports medicine.
2. Prior to participation in any intercollegiate sports activity, the student must disclose full information concerning illnesses and injuries sustained prior to matriculation at Drexel University to the examining physician, team physician or athletic trainer. Drexel University is not responsible for injuries sustained prior to becoming a student athlete.
3. The student must report all injuries sustained in the course of university athletic activities as defined previously in this document at the time of their occurrence to an athletic trainer or a coach. Drexel University will not be responsible for bills acquired as a result of injuries not reported to the sports medicine department.
4. The student athlete must report to one of the health services physicians, hospital, or Sports Medicine Clinic if directed by the athletic trainer.
5. The student athlete agrees to follow all the procedures required of their primary insurance carrier first before utilizing Drexel University's secondary coverage. The athlete agrees to accept the responsibility if they are negligent in following claim procedures or negligent in providing the necessary claim information.
6. The student athlete is responsible for following their medical claims. The Sports Medicine Department is only responsible for filing claims that are reported to the athletic training staff.
7. The student athlete must provide complete and accurate medical insurance information. Falsification of medical insurance information will result in the loss of secondary medical coverage provided by Drexel University.
8. The Drexel University Sports Medicine Team is responsible for clearing all injured athletes. University physicians have the ultimate authority to clear an injured student-athlete for participation.
9. The student AND Policyholder must sign this document to signify that he/she has read and understood the terms and conditions under which he/she will be permitted to participate in intercollegiate athletic activities at Drexel University.
Insurance Coverage
1. The Drexel University student sickness and accident health insurance policy is not an acceptable policy for varsity athletic participation.
2. Student-Athletes will not be allowed to participate in any varsity athletic activity without the completion of all student-athlete medical forms (contained under forms).
3. All medical bills, co-pays and deductibles are the responsibility of the student athlete.
Drexel University provides secondary insurance coverage for athletes to be utilized for injuries sustained while participating in the play or official team practice of intercollegiate sports, including sponsored and authorized team travel. Such payment by the University athletic insurance policy will be limited to $65,000 for medical expenses incurred per incident. All medical bills surpassing this amount will be covered by the NCAA catastrophic insurance policy. All claims must be filed within sixty days (60) after the accident. There is a two-year limit to claiming medical bills. Please note that any claims not processed within the designated claim period will not be covered and become the responsibility of the student athlete.
Claim Information
All medical bills for your son/daughter incurred as a result of an accident in the intercollegiate sports program will be sent directly to the athlete, or to the parent's home address. Any injury received that is not a direct result of varsity athletic participation will not be covered by the university secondary insurance policy and thus is the sole responsibility of the student athlete. In some cases the athletic department may get a copy of the bill. However, the athletic department is not the primary site for medical bills to be sent. The following are instructions for filing medical claims:
• Submit the medical bill to your family insurance plan first. They will either:
1. Honor the claim and pay the entire amount or a portion of the bill.
2. Not honor the claim and send you a letter of denial.
• No claim should be denied if appropriate procedure is followed.
• All athletes should be familiar with their insurance carrier and insurance benefits.
• If there is a remaining balance after your family or group insurance plan has contributed towards the claim, send a copy of the Explanation of Benefits (E.O.B) received from your family insurance plan and a copy of the itemized bill to:
• K + K Insurance
• 1712 Magnavox Way
• PO Box 2338
• Fort Wayne, IN 46801
• Attn: Karen Freilburger
• If you receive a letter of denial from your family or group insurance plan, send the letter of denial along with copies of the itemized bills to the address listed above. Any bills sent to K + K Insurance should be itemized copies.
• Drexel University does not cover deductibles.
• Drexel University will not be held responsible for claims that are denied due to student-athlete/parent negligence during the claim process.
• Any athlete carrying an HMO or PPO insurance plan should be reminded that procedures must be followed within the restrictions of their particular plan. The student athlete is responsible for any referrals or compliance with site capitations when obtaining procedures or appointments. If a student ignores these procedures any bills incurred will be the responsibility of the student athlete.
• Please feel free to call the sports medicine department at (215) 895-1734 or (215) 895-1597 if you have any questions or concerns.
NCAA Regulations
It is impermissible (NCAA regulation 16.4.2) for any college or university to provide coverage, or pay the bills incurred for expenses in relation to illness or conditions, which are not sustained as the direct result of an accident in our intercollegiate sports program. (This includes preexisting conditions, non-athletic injuries, and injuries occurring while participating in summer leagues.)
